all day for more coverage of sandy a very big day here. >> log on to foxandfriends.com for the after the show show. we'll see you back here next weekend. >> he'll be here. we start with a fox news alert, we're tracking what for millions of people in the northeast could be the most powerful, dangerous storm in decades. a live look at the radar, you can see hurricane sandy swirling up the east coast, clearly a monster storm on the way. the hurricane now on a path to combine with two major winter storms as well as a full moon, so called super storm. the effects may be felt as far as michigan, more than 600 miles on the eastern seaboard. sandy is battering north carolina with winds an rain. the hurricane generating a significant storm surge that sends huge waves ashore.

new jersey under mandatory evacuation orders. governors declaring states of emergency there. >> that's quite a storm. forgive me but we have our eyes on monitors and just keep an eye on everything. we have fox team coverage of the storm. first, rick reichmuth live in the fox extreme weather center. no joke today. elizabeth is in kill devil hills, north carolina, already being battered. first to rick with the latest on hurricane sandy's path. >> the storm is strengthening, which is hard to believe. we have cloud cover from canada to ohio. still down to south carolina and the center of the storm is way out here in the atlantic still yet and the pressure continues to drop. that indicates a strengthening storm and that's what we expect

to see. the rain will continue to fall across the airline in a coastline but spreading north so we have rain in philadelphia. and it will be towards new york city. we're 36 hours from the main event. i want to show you -- i put the two most reliable computer models on top of each other. where you see the rings, those are rings of consistent pressure and means windy conditions. through time, it starts to split a little bit. by dinnertime tonight but the track is the same, just the timing is different. 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, one of the models shows a center of landfall here in central new jersey. the next one grows and makes landfall also in central jersey. north of that will be significant because of the way

the land goes, new york city, long island and north new jersey and the water doesn't have any way to get out, the way the land is shaped. there are a significant storm surge in long island sound exiting through the east river and it won't be able to get out. so we predict a significant storm surge and waves up to 20 feet on top of the storm surge. so very big problems from that. that's the coastal impacts. inland, major impact. it's such a huge storm, wind warnings from maine down into south carolina -- or north carolina. i want to point out one thing that's important. this is going to be transitioning from a hurricane, meteorologically, to a nor'easter. when that happens, the national hurricane center doesn't monitor it. it goes into the local meteorological offices so hurricane warnings have not been posted in the northeast.

hurricane warnings obviously make people realize a huge storm is coming. without warnings, people might not take is seriously. all this brown, think of it as a hurricane warning. it's the same thing, just coming from a different office. a pr thing and technical meteorologistist thing. >> i never knew that but i read your note and it seems we should take this seriously. >> absolutely. >> we're glad you're on it. thank you so much. a state of emergency in north carolina at this moment. parts of that state getting slammed by strong winds all last night as hurricane sandy moves in. elizabeth is standing on the surf at the beach and man, oh, man is it getting stronger. >> i know. every hour we say this can't get worse and it seems to do so. we're getting gusts now between 50 and 60 miles an hour, the once that knock you off your heels.

with it, cold rain filled with sand. you can see the angry surf behind me. we saw 30 feet of beach yesterday. you can see that's completely gone so now that angry surf coupled by the high tide. the fact that the storm is still 200 miles away, you can see even with that distance, how close that surf is coming to the sand dunes and threatening a lot of the homes in this area. that's the biggest concern, the outer banks surrounded by water on both sides, low-lying areas. these folks are concerned with the beach erosion will come intense flooding. the highway, the main thoroughfare is closed and the ferry ways transporting people from the barrier islands are not in service. the conditions we're seeing now, the gusts between 50 and 60 miles an hour, will persist

7.7 struck last night right off the coast of canada and is effecting hawaii. we're getting slammed on both sides of our country. in america's election headquarters, back to politics. there's only nine days before election day. while many polls show president obama and romney running neck-and-neck, there are signs that the momentum may be shifting. it could have something to do with how americans view the candidates. look at this daily tracking poll showing the president's approval rating plunging. losing 7 points in a few days. quite a jump. david hawkins from cq roll call daily briefing joins us. >> good morning. >> seven points. that's a big difference, more

than we've seen in a while. how much weight do you place in the poll? >> it happened this spring. to be honest i'm skeptical of this poll. gallup, as you may know, seems to have been tracking a little bit more negative towards the president and positive towards romney than all the other polls. it is also what -- it's interesting that there doesn't seem to be a reason why, in that one week, which started the morning of the debates and goes until friday, what about the job performance caused a swoon. potentially after the debate he became a full-time candidate so maybe people said he should do things more presidential. who knows, maybe his reaction to the storm in the next couple of days. >> wait, wait, david, don'tbury the lead, libya and the reaction to libya now that the information comes out?

you forgot to mention that. >> fair enough. absolutely. that could be it too. but what is also true is that the -- the approval rating you showed should match with the number that gallup is asking about reelection. it isn't. >> then let me throw one more thing -- okay. point taken. one more interesting development. i'll ask your opinion, the des moines register has not in decades endorsed a republican. they have said that governor romney, and they make interesting points about it's the economy that's most important to people, and even though both president obama and governor romney are harvard law graduates and good family men, when it comes to running a business and getting people back to work, which at least 23 million people are concerned about, governor romney is the man for the job and the

des moines register is endorsing governor romney. >> huge in iowa, potentially. obviously completely stuck in the polls, the president seems to have had more people coming out in early voting but the statewide polling in iowa shows romney gaining. six electoral votes, it could come down to a margin of victory in the single digits. this one matters. it's also the case that the des moines register has gotten this endorsement correct in five of the -- all five of the last races. they endorsed al gore in 2000 and he got most of the popular vote. 80s pretty good bellwether. >> we're going to take a look at that in the next hour. the popular vote verses electoral vote. >> who in the office would be

able to stimulate businesses, have a plan that gets small businesses back on their feet and therefore you have hiring. do you see that as the most important issue in our country right now? >> it's not up to me to say. i'm just one voter but that's what voters are saying. it's also why several other papers in addition to the des moines register, endorsed barack obama and switched to mitt romney. that's the main reason they cite. in the end it comes back to job creation as what will decide the vote. >> i'm glad we were able to look at all of these in conjunction so you get a full picture. thank you so much, nice to see you. >> thank you very much. president obama firmly denying claims he did not tell the truth about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. but fox news learned c.i.a. higher-ups refused to provide

panetta says the african command agreed no reinforcement should be sent to benghazi. that's not what general ham is reported to have said to the congressman. i think the picture we have of the administration is a lot of fingers pointing different directions and no clear pictures as to what actually happened. i think the only place you can trace this to is the white house. in any administration i've served in, it would be inconceivable to me that as this attack began and unfolded, the president wasn't in the center of things. he's not going to be making tactical decisions, but the vibes that he sends off tell his subordinate what he expects. if the president said do what you can be smart and don't make this worse, then i think the signal is be very careful before you go in. that's obviously the result because the four americans were

killed and no outside aide came to them. >> is it fair to hold the president responsible for this when there's so many things going on and decisions are made at a lower level? >> i don't think there's so much going on other than the reelection. secretary of state of that i worked for, collin powell, would have been on this 24/7. i remember when the embassy in kuwait was surrounded in 1990 after husain invaded kuwait, that was the fate of the diplomats, the top of his agenda at the morning staff meeting. what were they doing? what could they be thinking about? as i say, it's a tactical decision, what you do. but the fact is, this tragedy reflects months of bad decisions, rejecting earlier

requests for enhanced security from the embassy in tripoli and the overall posture was not ready despite warnings this had happened to our consulate in benghazi to the british facility and the red cross. so there's a failure here, despite the arguments of the administration. >> you've been an advisor to the romney campaign. you've been on the front lines as a diplomat. how do you think this will play out in the campaign? >> i think there's rising awareness, be latedly given the lack of coverage in other news media that we had a real failure when four americans die and were not given adequate protection. that's a systemic failure of policy and management. when you have something as prominent as libya has been in the obama administration's foreign policy, if you takes the
